THE USEFUL DIFFERENCE

Samsung Food is worth trying when your recipes come from several places and you want a shared plan across phone and browser. Start with its free manual planner, then judge whether Food+ adds something you will use.

The current baseline matters: Mealime closes on 21 October 2026. Its Pro recipes and features are now available to all users, and its notice says subscribers will receive no further subscription charges before closure. Its catalogue continues in free Meals Hub through Albertsons Companies apps and websites, including recipe browsing, plans and lists without a nearby store. Compare Samsung Food with these current free options, rather than Mealime’s former paid tier. Official closing announcement.

A collection that can include more than one cook

A household meal plan is often assembled in pieces: someone sends a recipe, someone else buys the ingredients, and the person cooking needs the instructions later. For that routine, access and sharing can matter as much as the number of available recipes.

Samsung Food offers recipe saving, discovery, planning and lists with Android, iOS and web access. Its official site describes saving web recipes and putting a personal collection into a weekly plan. Source: Samsung Food overview.

If Mealime helped by narrowing your dinner choices, an open recipe collection may initially feel less focused. Make a short collection of meals you would cook this month. Give new discoveries a separate place so they do not crowd out the dependable dinners.

Two limits are more specific than the broad marketing labels: the 10 September 2026 planner guide allows three saved plans free, versus unlimited with Food+, and gives basic users two weeks of personalised recommendations. For photographed recipes, Samsung’s saving guide states three free scans, versus unlimited with Food+. Neither limit is a general cap on manually planning dinners or saving recipe links.

Save a recipe, schedule it and make the list

Samsung Food documents a URL-saving route on desktop and mobile: Saved → + → Save recipe link → paste URL → Save. On a phone, you can also share a recipe page to Samsung Food and choose Save recipe. These routes save individual recipes; they do not transfer a private Mealime account. Samsung Food’s recipe-saving instructions.

  1. Save and check. Open the saved dish beside its source, including any separate sauce or topping section.
  2. Put it on a day. In Planner’s Plan tab, tap a day’s +, choose Add saved recipe, select the dish and add it.
  3. Build the shopping list. Use the list button at the bottom of the planner, then Add Plan to Shopping List. Review pantry stock and add other groceries.

The planning controls above are documented in the planner guide updated 10 September 2026. A recipe left without a day goes into Queue for later scheduling.

Check whether the quantities refer to the original servings, whether an instruction mentions an ingredient missing from the list, and whether ingredient notes remain attached to the right line. A successful save is the beginning of verification. Attractive formatting cannot tell you whether a fraction or a preparation instruction is correct.

When planning with another person, agree on a small convention: who chooses the final dishes and who checks the pantry. Otherwise a shared list can faithfully reflect two different assumptions. For example, one person may remove rice because it is in the cupboard while another is planning to use the last of it for lunch.

AI changes the recipe or suggests the week

These are separate Food+ actions. To adapt a saved recipe on mobile, open it from Saved, use the ingredient page’s Edit button and choose Personalize with AI. Manual editing is a separate choice. Review the resulting ingredients and instructions before using the adaptation. Official recipe-editing guide.

For weekly suggestions, open Planner → For you. You can add the suggested week, select individual meals or swap suggestions. You still decide what enters the plan. Tailored-plan instructions.

What does Samsung Food+ cost?

On 12 September 2026, Food+ advertises $6.99 per month or $59.99 per year, with a seven-day trial. These are the dollar prices on its public page, not a quote for every country. Local prices vary; subscription purchase is on mobile and the trial becomes paid unless cancelled. Food+ plans and FAQ.

At those advertised prices, twelve monthly payments total $83.88, so annual billing costs $23.89 less over a full year. It also commits more money at once. Samsung’s subscription manual says the trial is available once per account; returning subscribers should not assume another free week.

Choose the billing period after you have compared the free routine with the upgrade. If you already know your favourite meals and just need a shared list, personalised suggestions may not change your week. If choosing a balanced set of meals is what stalls you, the suggested plan is the feature to examine closely.

Write down the actual amount shown on your device and the renewal date. A useful paid trial should answer a specific question, such as whether you accept enough suggested meals to save planning time.

Set up the household handoff

Plan sharing starts in the iOS or Android app: Plan → three-dot menu → Share Plan. Joining replaces the collaborator’s individual plan, so retain anything they need first. Samsung Food’s collaboration instructions.

  1. Keep a readable Mealime backup before moving favourites. The downloaded TXT/JSON files are not a promised Samsung Food import format.
  2. Agree which person owns the shared plan and which person checks pantry stock before shopping.
  3. After a dinner changes, review the shopping list for ingredients that belong only to the old dish. Do not assume a previously created list now represents every later edit.

For example, if Tuesday changes from curry to pasta, keep onions that both dishes need but check whether the curry paste is still wanted. Compare the updated list with the ingredients you already have before shopping.

If you also try a retailer checkout, review product substitutions, pack sizes and fees there. A planner’s ingredient quantities are not the same as the packs a shop will sell.
