THE USEFUL DIFFERENCE
Eat This Much is most relevant when you want a day of eating organised around nutrition targets. Test whether its suggested food fits your actual life before paying for the full-week planning workflow.
Mealime closes on 21 October 2026. Pro is now free and existing subscriptions will not renew, according to version 4.21.35’s release notes. All its recipes continue in free Meals Hub, with plans and grocery lists usable even without a nearby Albertsons Companies store. That is the first alternative to consider if keeping the familiar catalogue is your main aim. Mealime’s official announcement.
Decide how much of the day you want planned
A dinner planner and a planner for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks solve different amounts of work. If breakfast is already settled and lunch happens at work, modelling every meal may add detail you do not need. If you want an organised day of eating, that same detail may be the reason to switch.
Eat This Much generates suggestions around calorie and macronutrient targets, food preferences, budget and cooking time. Its free account includes custom foods and recipes, intake tracking and recurring foods; Premium extends that into a weekly plan and shop. Official account comparison, updated 5 May 2026.
You can use it for dinner alone. In Meal Settings, the Advanced tab’s Skip generating option leaves selected meals empty. The generator still assumes calories and macros for those skipped meals based on their Meal Size setting. This is useful when lunch happens elsewhere, but it means an empty lunch slot is still part of the day’s calculation. Save the settings and regenerate to apply them. Eat This Much’s single-meal setup, updated 5 May 2026.
Use a realistic day when you evaluate it. Include the breakfast you actually eat, the time available for lunch and the dinner your household will accept. A plan that looks precise but requires a new routine at every meal may be harder to follow than one with fewer moving parts.
Compare the planning commitment
| Planning job | Mealime routine | Eat This Much Free | Eat This Much Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choose meals | Personalised recipe suggestions and a plan. | Generate a day around your targets and preferences. | Generate a week with different layouts for different days. |
| Shop for the plan | Automatic grocery list from selected meals. | No Premium automatic grocery workflow. | Automatic groceries, adjustable shopping dates and pantry deduction. |
| Keep familiar foods | Save favourite recipes. | Custom recipes, recurring foods and collections. | Free features plus saved weeks and automatic leftovers. |
| Continue using it | Pro currently free; recipes continue in free Meals Hub after closure. | Free daily planning. | US$59.99/year or US$14.99 monthly. |
Mealime’s baseline is documented in its official listing. Eat This Much separates the tiers on its pricing page and subscription guide; pantry behavior is described in its pantry guide.
For family dinners, the How many people setting scales ingredients and the amount to cook. It does not automatically solve each person’s different nutrition targets. A larger household portion is therefore a different feature from an individually tailored plan for every diner. Family planning documentation, updated 5 May 2026.
Judge the generated plan beyond its totals
Look at each suggested meal and ask three ordinary questions: would I eat it, can I make it at that time, and can I buy the ingredients in the quantities shown? You may accept the overall structure while replacing a dish that needs more preparation than the morning allows.
Next examine the kitchen workload. Four different cooked meals in a day are a very different commitment from a familiar breakfast, a packed lunch and one cooked dinner. Count pans and preparation sessions as well as servings. This is particularly useful if the person shopping and the person cooking are different people.
Keep raw and cooked measurements distinct when entering personal recipes. A portion of dry rice and the same weight of cooked rice describe different amounts of food. Precise-looking totals still depend on the recipe data and the portions you enter.
A generated week may miss the exact targets. Eat This Much says its weekly generator balances variety and a manageable grocery list alongside nutrition; strict cooking-time and food constraints reduce its options. Regenerating a particular meal or day puts more emphasis on targets than regenerating the whole week. This is a tradeoff to inspect, not a guarantee of exact totals. Understand the Premium price before comparing
Checked on 12 September 2026, Eat This Much’s official subscription guide lists US$59.99 per year or US$14.99 month-to-month, with a 14-day free trial. The pricing page rounds the annual offer to US$5 per month; that is an annual-billing equivalent, not a US$5 monthly plan. Published amounts and trial and annual-offer display.
The service has a web planner, an iPhone/iPad app requiring iOS/iPadOS 15.5 or later, and an Android app. Apple’s listing says the local subscription amount appears before confirmation and subscriptions renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends. Check your own offer rather than treating a US web price as a worldwide app price.
The most useful free-versus-paid question is whether you need the weekly workflow. Generating individual days for free is different from receiving a joined-up week and its automatic list. If your reason for leaving Mealime is to simplify the weekly shop, evaluate that paid step directly.
Keep grocery spending separate from the subscription. A plan can call for a small amount of several ingredients while the shop charges for full packs. Compare the actual basket with what remains in your kitchen; do not judge affordability from per-serving ingredients alone.
Run a day, then a deliberately imperfect week
Suppose breakfast is familiar, lunch is at work and Wednesday dinner must be quick. Start with a free day to see whether the suggestions appeal, then use the weekly Premium workflow below to turn those constraints into a shop. This is a worked setup example based on the documented web controls.
| Stage | Action | What needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Settings | Keep breakfast recurring, skip lunch generation and reduce Wednesday dinner’s cooking time. | Saving preferences does not rewrite meals already generated. |
| 2. Nutrition profile | If using a new target profile, assign it to the relevant day in Meal Layout. | Creating a profile alone does not make the generator use it. |
| 3. Regenerate | Open the week’s Regenerate control. Choose Keep or Replace for existing meals and leave Reset Groceries checked for an updated list. | Choose whether the focus is variety, targets, fewer groceries or a balance. |
| 4. Shopping dates | Set the list’s calendar range to the days you are buying for. | Changing the range resets the list; make manual edits afterwards. |
| 5. Review and shop | Check portions and pantry quantities, then add household extras. | Ingredient amounts and supermarket pack sizes can differ. |
These steps follow the guides to settings and regeneration, assigning targets, rebuilding a week and grocery dates and extras, each updated 5 May 2026.
The pantry follows your records, not your kitchen
Premium subtracts recorded pantry stock from the shopping requirement. In an illustrative example, a plan needing three eggs with two already recorded should leave one to buy. After shopping, move purchased items into Pantry and adjust quantities to match the actual pack. Buying six eggs means recording six, not just the one the recipe needed.
Ingredients are deducted after the planned eating date when the weekly generator runs, or when you choose remove eaten. If Wednesday becomes a takeaway evening, remove the uneaten meal from the plan so its ingredients are not deducted. Eat This Much also says it cannot yet generate an entire plan exclusively from pantry foods. Pantry rules and limitations, updated 5 May 2026.
If a required ingredient seems missing, first check the shopping date range. A manually deleted item remains hidden until the list is reset or the next weekly reset occurs. Official missing-items troubleshooting.
For Mealime favourites, keep an original link and readable backup. Try a supported custom-recipe route with one dish. This guide does not establish a bulk Mealime import or guarantee that the website’s JSON file can be uploaded.
If your priority is importing individual dinners into another recipe app, compare MealPot, our product. Recipe import requires Pro; the app supports iPhone and iPad on iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. The free browser TXT/JSON backup is separate from app import. MealPot’s App Store listing.
Decide after cooking, not just after generating. Record the meals you followed, those you changed and the reason for each change. That tells you which settings need adjustment and whether this style of planning earns its extra setup.
Frequently asked questions
Is Eat This Much free for a whole week and grocery list?
The official pricing page lists daily generation in Free, with weekly planning and the automatic grocery list in Premium. Free daily planning is not the same package as the full weekly workflow.
Does US$5 per month mean I can pay US$5 each month?
No. The official guide lists US$59.99 annually or US$14.99 month-to-month. The US$5 headline is a rounded annual equivalent. Local app offers are shown before purchase.
Will a nutrition target make the plan right for my family?
It is one input. The family setting scales ingredients and amounts to cook; it does not automatically target every diner’s separate nutrition needs. Also inspect dislikes, cooking time and lunch arrangements.
Why did changing my preferences leave the meals unchanged?
New settings apply when you regenerate a plan or when the next automatic weekly generation runs. For a new nutrition profile, also assign it in Meal Layout before regenerating.
Keep the dinners worth keeping.
Save one favourite, check the copy and plan a small first week.
