Ingredients

  • ½ (18 oz) bagbroccoli florets
  • 1 (1 inch) pieceginger root
  • 8 ozham steak, boneless
  • ½ cupjasmine rice
  • ½ (14 oz) bagshredded cabbage (coleslaw mix)

From the pantry: chili-garlic sauce, garlic powder, hoisin sauce, stir-fry sauce, toasted sesame oil

Cookware

chef's knife · colander · cutting board · grater (optional) · measuring cups · measuring spoons · mixing bowls · nonstick skillet · small saucepan · stirring spoon

Directions

  1. Rinse the jasmine rice until the water runs clear, then drain and place it in a small saucepan with fresh water. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Peel and mince the ginger, then combine it in a small bowl with the stir-fry sauce, water, hoisin sauce, chili-garlic sauce, and garlic powder; set the mixture aside.
  3. When the liquid starts to boil, stir, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Let the rice cook until all the liquid is absorbed, about 15–18 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, still covered, for 5 minutes to finish steaming.
  5. Meanwhile, preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Add a thin layer of oil to the hot skillet, then cook the broccoli, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften, about 3–4 minutes.
  7. Dice the ham and add it to the skillet along with the shredded cabbage and the prepared sauce; cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage wilts and everything is warmed through, about 2 minutes.
  8. Stir the cooked rice into the skillet with the vegetables and ham, then remove from heat and toss to combine before serving.

Two tips

  • Prep tip: cook the rice ahead of time and refrigerate to speed up weeknight cooking.
  • Serving idea: finish with a drizzle of additional sesame oil and serve with extra chopped vegetables or a side of steamed greens if available.
