QUICK ANSWER
1 cup all-purpose flour = 120 g. 1 cup granulated sugar = 198 g. 1 cup butter = 227 g (2 sticks). 1 cup water ≈ 236 g. Multiply the number of cups by the ingredient’s weight per cup; there is no single cups-to-grams factor.

Why there is no single cups-to-grams number.
A cup of flour and a cup of honey fill the same space, but honey is almost three times heavier. Flour also compacts: scooped straight from the bag, a cup can weigh 140 g or more, which is why baking recipes that list grams are more reliable. These figures assume flour spooned into the cup and levelled. Metric cups (250 ml, used in Australia and elsewhere) hold about 6% more than a US cup.
Common questions.
How many grams is 1 cup of flour?
120 g for all-purpose flour spooned and levelled. Bread flour and cake flour use the same 120 g reference in this chart.
How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?
198 g for granulated white sugar, 213 g for packed brown sugar and 113 g for unsifted powdered sugar.
How many grams is half a cup?
It depends on the ingredient: 60 g of flour, 99 g of sugar, 113.5 g of butter (one stick) or about 118 g of water.
How many grams is a cup of water?
About 236 g, because one US cup is 236.6 ml and a millilitre of water weighs about a gram.
How many grams of butter in a cup?
227 g, which is 2 US sticks. See the butter conversion chart for sticks and tablespoons.
Is it better to weigh or measure by cups?
Weighing is more consistent, especially for flour. For everyday cooking, cups are fine; for baking, use grams when the recipe provides them.
