AT A GLANCE
A meal planner can organise recipes and shopping. Its nutrition display or calorie filter does not establish that you will lose weight or that a particular target is appropriate for you.
Separate meal organisation from a weight-loss programme.
If your question is whether Mealime can help you choose dinners, review the recipes, portions and shopping workflow. If your question is whether a plan will produce a particular health result, a recipe app’s feature list cannot answer that. These are different decisions, even when the same app displays calorie numbers.
The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases describes a weight-loss programme as involving ongoing guidance, support, appropriate eating and activity plans, and help maintaining changes. It recommends discussing an approach tailored to your health and preferences with a health professional. NIDDK guidance, reviewed February 2024.
Meal planning can organise the food you intend to prepare within that wider approach. Easier shopping or more consistent cooking are useful practical outcomes to evaluate, but they do not establish weight loss. Choose an app for the jobs it demonstrably supports; discuss individual nutrition targets or treatment needs with a qualified professional.
Mealime closes on 21 October 2026. Pro is currently free and subscriptions will not renew, according to version 4.21.35’s release notes. Its catalogue continues in free Meals Hub. Older help articles that label nutrition and filters as Pro should not be read as a current purchase requirement. Official transition notice.
What Mealime documents about nutrition.
Mealime’s nutrition help describes opening a recipe and choosing More, then Nutrition facts on mobile. Its older web instructions place nutrition beneath the recipe image. The article was last updated in July 2019, so use the current interface if those labels have changed.
Read the serving basis before comparing two dishes. A recipe total, a per-serving figure and the portion you actually put on a plate are different records. If you change ingredients, brands or amounts, check how the app handles that change instead of assuming a displayed figure automatically describes the altered dish.
A recipe’s serving count describes its stated yield. It is not a personal instruction about how much to eat. NIDDK distinguishes a serving used in nutrition information from the portion you choose to eat. Keep that distinction when copying a recipe or logging food. NIDDK portion guidance.
A calorie filter narrows the recipe list.
The official filtering article, updated 29 July 2019, documents starting a new plan, opening the magnifying-glass search and selecting a preset range under Calories. The displayed recipes then fall within that range. This is a selection tool, not an assessment of your medical needs or proof that the rest of a day’s food is represented.
Compare like with like: check the serving basis, what the dish includes and any additional sides, sauces or drinks. A lower displayed number does not by itself establish a more suitable meal. A dinner recipe also does not account for breakfast, lunch or other food outside the plan.
Mealime’s 3 December 2020 getting-started guide separately describes Settings → Advanced Filters for calories and other nutrition fields. A filter applies the choices entered; it does not decide those choices for you.
Keep servings cooked separate from servings logged.
Mealime’s December 2020 guide documents opening Nutrition facts after cooking, selecting the number of servings consumed and choosing Add to Health App. The current iOS listing also advertises Health integration. That later documentation is more useful than the February 2018 tracker article, which predates it and says direct integrations had not been built. Documented Health flow.
As a portion-record example, cooking a four-serving recipe for the household and eating one serving are two different quantities. A food record should reflect what you consumed, including any personal changes, rather than automatically treating the cooked batch as your meal.
Check the current connection, permissions and destination entry on your device if you use this feature. Confirm the date and portion, and look for an existing entry before adding it again. Saving a recipe is a separate operation from creating a food diary record. The nutrition guide covers those records in more detail.
Build a practical, balanced planning worksheet.
The NHS Eatwell Guide describes balance across the food groups over a day or week; every individual meal need not reproduce the whole guide. It includes fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, protein foods, dairy or alternatives, and oils/spreads. Use that wider view when reviewing a plan instead of judging it solely by one recipe’s calorie number. NHS Eatwell Guide.
This sample worksheet helps organise decisions without assigning a calorie allowance or a target weight. Replace the examples with your own routine and any individual advice you follow.
| Planning question | Sample entry | Action before shopping |
|---|---|---|
| Which meals happen at home? | Three dinners at home; one lunch uses planned leftovers. | Write down breakfast, other lunches and extras separately so dinner selection does not hide them. |
| How do the food groups fit? | A bean-and-vegetable dinner with rice; review the rest of the day too. | Check the wider plan against the Eatwell Guide or your own professional advice. |
| How much will be cooked? | Four recipe portions: two for dinner, two reserved for another meal. | Set recipe yield for the batch; keep each person’s amount separate from batch size. |
| What differs from the source? | A different sauce or ingredient brand. | Record the actual product and amount if using nutrition figures; do not assume the original estimate updates. |
| What makes the plan workable? | A short preparation window on Wednesday. | Choose a meal with suitable steps and equipment, or arrange a practical alternative. |
| What should change next week? | One recipe took longer than expected; an ingredient remained unused. | Adjust the schedule or shopping quantity. These observations assess the routine, not a promised weight result. |
After selecting meals, check the list against your kitchen and local products. Record recipe modifications clearly: the ingredient changed, the amount and the serving count. Our serving-scaling guide covers recipe arithmetic; it does not choose a dietary portion for you.
If you have special dietary requirements or medical needs, the NHS suggests checking with a registered dietitian about adapting the Eatwell Guide. A general worksheet cannot resolve those individual requirements. Who the guide is for.
Keep your information understandable when switching.
Save the recipes you want to keep, along with any personal notes about modifications. If you retain nutrition information, label its source and serving basis. Do not merge an old displayed value into a changed recipe without checking what it represents.
The free website backup tool preserves supported recipe information for review, not a complete health record. Public recipe data may omit nutrition even when the app displays it, so keep a readable copy of any panel you need with its serving context. The TXT/JSON files do not automatically import into the MealPot app or export Apple Health history.
MealPot is our product. Individual URL import requires Pro and runs through Recipes → + → Import Recipe → review → save to My Recipes. It is available for iPhone and iPad on iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. App Store listing · Import guide. Keep the nutrition record and any diary workflow separate from the recipe import.
Free Meals Hub is the official continuation of Mealime’s full catalogue. Mealime says some preferences must be established in the new account; it does not promise a complete nutrition-history transfer. Transition FAQ. Use the Pro inventory and switch checklist to identify the recipe copies, notes and tracking functions you want to retain.
Common questions
Does Mealime guarantee weight loss?
A planning feature or nutrition display does not establish a guaranteed health outcome. This guide makes no such claim.
Does a calorie filter tell me what I should eat?
It narrows displayed recipes by a selected range. It does not determine your individual nutrition needs.
Will a recipe backup transfer my nutrition tracking history?
No. It is a recipe backup, not a full food diary or health-data export. Check any tracking workflow separately.
